KISUMU’S RAILWAY TRANSPORT SET TO REVAMP IN PROPOSED METROPOLITAN COMMUTER RAIL PLAN
24th June 2013, - Kisumu City will soon have a modern metropolitan commuter railway network within the city with linkages to principal urban centres in surrounding counties in the Lake region.
Kenya Railways Corporation which is charged with rail development as a Government Agent in the Vision 2030 has announced that it is currently undertaking studies necessary for this dream to be realized.
The project will be positioned in Kisumu City and the adjoining Vihiga, Nandi, Kericho, Nyamira, Kisii, Homabay and Siaya counties respectively. The proposed lines will address two crucial areas and will be designed differently in order to meet specific interests and reduce burden on transport infrastructure.
Speaking at a stakeholders meeting in Kisumu, Kenya Railways Corporation Managing Director Mr. Nduva Muli said, “The first area will involve proposed routes within Kisumu City and will link the town and Nyalenda, Nyamasaria, Jomo Kenyatta, Kondele, Mamboleo, Airport and Otonglo.”
The second area that will be addressed by the Master Plan is the development of a railway network that will connect Kisumu City to various counties. The development of this railway network will see Kisumu City connected to Nandi, Nyando, Siaya, Nyamira and Homabay counties.
“Kisumu is easy within reach of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Northern Tanzania and Southern Sudan making it a natural hub for trade and a strategic transport route in the East African region,” said Mr. Muli.
He also mentioned the project will provide a direct rail link to Kisumu Airport, a variety of commercial buildings and a business park for light manufacturing and assembly points.
The Kisumu railway system which is expected to be complete before 2017 will open up the region for growth and reduce reliance on road transport.
“This part of the Corporation’s plan to develop commuter railway services in three cities, including Nairobi and Mombasa in the next three years is a major step towards attracting new investments in the counties,” said Muli.
The Government is committed to investing in the railway network to provide reliable, safe, affordable and efficient rail services in the country.
